St. Clair Street Toledo, Ohio 1957

Most of my research into older trucking companies has been in city directories. Some are more detailed than others. Looking at the street listings will sometimes reveal hiidden treasures not found elsewhere. For instance, I found of particular interest how in earlier years most truck terminals were situated in a certain area of bigger cities, such as Toledo, Ohio. This is a listing of the trucking companies located on St. Clair Street

143 Mercury Motorways, Inc, Lemke Catrage Co. and Blair Transport.

145 Delta Truck Lines, Kuhlman Truck Line, Archold Truck Lines, Roifes Truck Lines and Jones Transfer Co.

Typical practice in those years were to have several smaller trucking companies share a terminal.

196 Transamerican Feight Lines

202 Motor Express, Inc.

230 CCC Highway Inc. garage

305 CCC Highway, Inc terminal

See? A hidden gem by looking at the individual street listings of businesses. CCC Highway had their garage at a separate address away from the terminal.

  1. Hi Ed,

I publish an Arizona contracting/history magazine. I see that Alabam Freight hauled in Arizona at one time. I was curious if you are interested in writing an article for us on Alabam Freight Lines, background history, fate, and their time in Arizona. I can search on my end for any images of them here in AZ for illustration and verbiage to use in the article.

    Thank you,

    1. Hi Billy,
I would be interested in writing the article on Alabam Freight Lines for the magazine. Could you advise on submission requirements including word count desired? Thanks for reaching out and I will keep you informed as to my progress.

      1. Hi Ed!

Just following up from our last correspondence regarding Alabam. I just received your current email discussing site fees, etc.

Can you send me your physical mailing address? I’d like to send you our Arizona contracting/history magazine.

Although Arizona curtailed, we cover a lot of history on companies that did business in AZ, like Alabam. Once we include the old history angle on topics, we can usually make them work for our readers, discussing their relation to the state.

Our reader demographic is typically older business owners and history enthusiast and includes trucking companies. With your background in writing and knowledge of older freight companies, maybe we could put together a list of companies that rolled through AZ for you to cover. I could assist with images relating to AZ, and we pay writers for published submissions.

Let me know your thoughts. Offhand, here are a few companies you could cover, where I could find AZ related material for you to add to your research. I also think truck related topics like, multiple front license plates, various truck models/mfg., chassis lengths, wig wag, twin sticks, dash tachographs, etc. Alabam Thunderbird Freight Lines Walsh Bros. (office Equipment) Est. 1919 Crystal Ice Cold Storage Co. (local truck and rail related material) Barq’s Bottling Co. CF Consolidated Freightways Carnation Dairy Co. Navajo Freight Allied Van Lines National Van Lines North American Van Lines Greyhound Van Lines Bekins Wilbur Ellis Cook Bros./ Fruehauf/ Dorsey/ etc. (various trailers) Capitol Products Helen & Ed Schaeffer Watson Bros.

        Thank you,

      2. Hello Billy,

This will be a project that I’ll enjoy doing for you. I recently got a new source of historical information that includes Arizona trucking companies.

My address is 201 Leonard Street in Thomasville, NC 27360-4129. I’m working on my list of companies to include as well as your list from before. Give me a couple of days to sort through my new source and I’ll reveal my possible list.

        Regards,
        Ed Craddock
